Port City Java Opens in New Harris Teeter Market; Additional Opportunities
WILMINGTON, N.C.-- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- January 27, 2005 -- Wilmington, NC based Port City Java announces the opening of a new prototype Port City Java. The new modular prototype is designed to operate in a non traditional café setting. The café opened at the new Harris Teeter located at 8260 Market Street Wilmington, NC. The café is the third unit to open inside of a Harris Teeter. In addition to these three units, Port City Java retails its whole bean coffee in another nine Harris Teeter Grocery Stores.
This unit is the first completely modular Port City Java the company has opened. Port City Java COO Don Reynolds states " the time frame to open this type of unit is dramatically reduced, by using this type of construction. The entire unit is built off premises, shipped to the location and reassembled. This allows us to pin point an opening date far in advance, keeps capital free until days before opening, and greatly reduces our construction cost. " The company had the unit delivered on Friday January 15th, 2005 and the café opened for business, along with Harris Teeter, on Wednesday January 19th, 2005. This type of unit works well in nontraditional settings. Port City Java defines nontraditional sites as opportunities in unconventional retail settings for a coffee café, such as a supermarket, hospital, office buildings and university settings. Reynolds also indicated this would allow the company to increase it's velocity of openings, as the company is opening Traditional Cafés, as well as nontraditional site cafés.
Additional Opportunities
Port City Java announces it has signed additional deals for nontraditional retail cafés. It plans to open a similar unit in the new Harris Teeter coming to Wilmington, NC. The company has signed a deal to open in a regional hospital in Dubois, PA, and is finalizing a deal with a University in NC. The company plans to pursue additional sites with this new model.
