Port City Java Going Global
WILMINGTON, N.C.-- (WECT NEWS CHANNEL 6) -- January 28, 2005 -- Whatever your taste, and now whatever language you speak, Port City Java can serve you. That's because there is more than just coffee brewing at the local coffee hot spot. Business is heating up, too.
The cafés are popping up all over town. In the Wilmington area alone, there are more than ten Port City Javas getting ready to open, or under construction, like the one on South 17th Street.
It doesn't stop there. A Port City Java location opens every eight to 10 days, from the Carolinas to New Jersey to Texas and now overseas.
" Right now in Saudi Arabia, they'll be opening in about two weeks, " said Don Reynolds, the Chief Operating Officer of the chain. " You'll be able to buy Port City Java in Saudi Arabia, and by the end of this year, you'll be able to go to Indonesia and see Port City Java. That's an amazing thing to think that it all started here. "
It's especially amazing when you consider that just a year and a half ago, there were only 18 locations.
200 Port City Javas are coming to Bali and Jakarta. Shamsul Khairil, the developer of the Indonesian stores, is training now in Wilmington. He said he's excited to bring the beans overseas.
" They have a very good product, organics, fresh fruit smoothies that not every café offers, " Khairil said.
" It's about partnering up with the right company, " Reynolds said. " There's no way we would ever understand the Indonesian market. We could never understand the Indonesian real estate market, traffic flow, pedestrian flow. "
Reynolds said there is no slowing down. Plans are in the works to bring Port City Java to China. Nevermind Boston; in the world's eyes, Wilmington is becoming the new Beantown.
