Port City Java Opens in Salisbury, NC - June 2005
WILMINGTON, N.C.-- (SALISBURY POST) -- April 04, 2005 -- In June, Port City Java will offer coffee fans the latest place to sit and relax with their favorite brew.
Michael and Cecelia Hughes are opening the local franchise in the Ketner Center building that most recently housed Duke Power. It was originally a bank.
Cecelia Hughes, a Rowan native and East Rowan graduate, said they leased the building in October but had been looking for the right place long before that.
Transforming the building at 1804 W. Innes St. has been no small task.
" If it works for a bank, it doesn't work for a restaurant, " she said.
The couple had to work through city ordinances and make sure all health aspects were taken into consideration as they removed the safe and worked with concrete floors.
" We took it down to the shell, " she said.
Since the couple are opening a franchise of Wilmington-based Port City Java, the cafe " has to be done their way, " Cecelia Hughes said.
Besides coffee, Port City Java's menu will include sandwiches, salads, baked goods and juices.
About 16 employees, mostly part-time, will work at the store. Hughes said she and her husband also will be there, at least for awhile after it opens.
The first Port City Java opened in March 1995 in Wilmington and started franchising in September 2003. It has 108 domestic cafes open or under development, mostly in the Southeast but spreading even to other countries.
