Port City Java Café and Coffeehouse Celebrates Grand Opening in The Woodlands
Make Yourself at Home

WILMINGTON, N.C.-- (LIVING MAGAZINE) -- October 10, 2004 -- From the unique blend of people who go there, to the organic premium blends of coffees that are served there, Port City Java in The Woodlands is definitely a coffee house worth visiting — again and again.
“When we designed the coffee house, we wanted it to be a place that felt like home,” said longtime entrepreneurs Kirk and Carol Goldman, who independently own and operate Port City Java, The Woodlands. “People love to gather here to relax and enjoy great coffee and great food. It’s a place to meet friends and make new friends. It’s kind of like ‘Cheers’ without the alcohol.”
There are a few other differences between Port City Java and the well-loved Chicago bar from the hit television show. At Port City Java, no expense was spared in creating an atmosphere that draws people in and entices them to stay. Two stunning fireplaces flank each end of the lounging areas. Overstuffed leather seating beckons patrons to sit, relax and savor the comfort in what feels like a cozy living room. Materials such as hardwood flooring, tumbled marble and travertine tiles lend an air of relaxed elegance and unmatched quality.
“We really put our heart and soul into putting this place together,” said Carol. “We knew people would enjoy the coffee and espresso creations but we wanted them
to really enjoy the atmosphere too.”
Port City Java — Not Your Average Joe
Port City Java is known internationally for purchasing only the finest green beans from across the globe and roasting them to perfection in their own roasteries. Their imported coffee beans hail from exceptional plantations from Angola to Zimbabwe. We are a true coffee bar in that European sense, where working in a coffee bar is a much sought-after profession,” Kirk explained. “We do everything by hand here; nothing is
automated and we train all of our people in the art of making everything FRESH.
From specialty creations like the Iced Milky Way, which features espresso as well as Ghirardelli Chocolate and Caramel Syrups, to the daily, fresh house-specialty blend, a beverage from Port City Java is a treat indeed.
All our espresso shots are pulled The Old Fashioned Way and our juices are freshly extracted,” Kirk said. “Everything here is first-rate and we’ve been told it’s the best in town.” From smoothies and shakes to teas, chillers and specialty coffees of all kinds, there is truly something for every taste at Port City Java.
When the Goldmans planned to open their own upscale coffee bar, they wanted to offer The Woodlands community not only a place to stop for a great cup of coffee but also a place where friends could meet for lunch or couples could come for a great dessert after an evening out.
To that end, they offer all-day dining at Port City Java starting with fresh-baked breakfast treats. “Our bakers come in every morning at 4:30 to bake our goodies for the day,” Carol said. From hearty, homemade scones and muffins to fresh bagels, croissants and cinnamon rolls, breakfast at Port City Java is guaranteed to start the day out right.
Fresh garden salads, homemadesoups and a variety of wraps and sandwiches, including Panini grilled specialty sandwiches served on herbed focaccia bread, offer diners an enticing dining-out alternative for lunch or dinner.
Above the coffee bar, a 42-inch plasma high-definition television tuned to network news keeps diners up-to-date on the latest happenings around the world and complimentary “wired or wireless” Internet access keeps customers as in touch as they want to be. Some Port City Java regulars, however, prefer to curl up in one of the shop’s overstuffed leather chairs and visit with a friend, read a book or even doze a little. “People really do fall asleep,” Kirk said, laughing. “ I have to wake them up to tell them it’s time to close!”
Port City Java is open weekdays from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. On Fridays, enjoy the live entertainment from 10 p.m. to 1p.m. and Saturday nights the spot stays open until midnight, giving late-nighters a place to wind down their evening in gourmet comfort and style. On the weekend, the coffee shop opens at 7 a.m.
The staff at Port City Java along with Kirk and Carol invite area residents to join them later this month for grand-opening celebrations. Support for the coffee house has already been strong as a diverse group of coffee lovers, young and old, has converged on the inviting locale and claimed it as a favorite spot.
Port City Java is conveniently located at College Park Plaza, West of I45 on FM 242 in The Woodlands, across from Montgomery Community College.
