Southern Appalachian Forest Coalition & Port City Java Brewing Something New
WILMINGTON, N.C.-- (SAFC.COM) -- December 01, 2002 -- The Southern Appalachian Forest Coalition (SAFC) recently started brewing something new with Port City Java the Great Forest Blend shade grown, organic, free trade coffee that not only tastes great and protects biological diversity of tropical forests, but also protects the intact forests right here in our own back yard!
The partnership will provide Southern Appalachian Forest Coalition $1 for every pound sold of the Great Forest Blend. The money will go toward SAFC's vision of protecting the intact areas of our National Forests to serve and sustain all communities, from the microscopic recyclers of the forest floor to our largest urban centers.
Not many people realize that the Southern Appalachian Forests have similar traits to tropical forests where coffee is produced. Like the tropics, we have biological diversity that is world renowned more tree species than all of Europe, over 200 species found nowhere else in the world, and thousands of invertebrate, plant, fungi and vertebrate researches have yet to discover.
Unfortunately, we also have many of the same problems. For one, our unique forests are being lost at a surprising rate. Forecasting models indicate that 12 million forest acres will be lost to urbanization between 1992 and 2020, and that trend will continue to increase. In addition, the Southeast produces more timber than any other country in the world, which is also expected to increase 60 percent. Of the forest that remains, more and more (15%) will become pine plantations, offering almost no wildlife and ecosystem support.
SAFC works to protect the intact areas of National Forests from logging industries that would cut, fragment and destroy those very areas. Fair trade, organic, shade grown coffee helps to protect tropical forests from mainstream coffee producers who clearcut their forests, use pesticides and displace local farmers. Both strategies work in protecting water quality, wildlife habitat and more. The Great Forest Blend is a Nicaragua and Guatemalan blend that is well balanced, with a lively character, a spicy complex flavor and a mid-bodied consistency. Coffee connoisseurs give it rave reviews.
